Wisconsin Animal Shelters Expect More Dogs Due to Puppy Mill Law

“About one in four dogs at the Green Lake County animal shelter have direct ties to a puppy mill. It’s a number that could jump as less reputable breeders are forced to call it quits under a law signed Tuesday by Governor Doyle. The dogs rescued from puppy mills are now up for adoption, but the shelter’s Janine Rubeck hopes tough new legislation will fix the problems they see. ‘We see a lot of puppy mill dogs. A lot of them are filthy, a lot of them are in terrible health, but the main problem that is the hardest to come back from is the emotional trauma, the mental trauma, which sometimes the dogs can’t recover from.’

Rubeck says Wisconsin was one of the few states without any restrictions on breeders until today.”
