Video: Man survives 46-vehicle crash, rescues dog

Fox 2 News Headlines

MICHIGAN CITY, Indiana (WJBK) –

Calls and emails have been coming into the Fox 2 newsroom about a dog rescued from a deadly chain reaction crash in Indiana. Sadly, his owner is one of three people who died. A local man is working to find the dog a home. (He says no more calls are needed. Enough people have expressed interest in adopting Sparkie.)

There was wreckage as far as the eye could see Thursday on I-94 near Michigan City, Indiana. 46 cars, SUVs and semis collided during a sudden white out. Bob Sharpe of White Lake was in the pile up that killed a man from Chicago and a couple from Grand Rapids and left more than two dozen others injured. We spoke to Bob by phone.

"The accident scene was massive carnage," he told Fox 2. "I was the lucky one. I came to a stop behind a bunch of vehicles that were crashing in front of me, vehicles were passing me and crashing behind me and I didn’t get touched."

Dogs train to sniff out trouble for diabetics

For 27 years, Sarah Breidenbach of St. Paul, Minn., had a foolproof way of knowing when her blood sugar level was dangerously low.

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a child, she could spot the early warning signs — feeling shaky and anxious.

Then one night while sleeping, her blood sugar level plummeted, causing a violent seizure that sent her to the hospital. Over the next 18 months, paramedics made 178 trips to her home.

That’s when her doctor prescribed an unusual tool to help manage her diabetes: a dog.

Miracle dog survives after being shot in the head six times and beaten with a shovel

A man who tried to kill his pet dog because he wasn’t able to find a new home for it has been sentenced to jail.

Marc Turnbull, 38, shot cross-breed Rocky five times in the head and once in the leg, hit the animal with a shovel and then left him to die in a ditch.

The dog was found by a member of the public some three days later, near the A5 at Weedon, Northamptonshire.

X-rays showed the extent of the damage dealt to Rocky, which included a large open wound on the back of his head that went down to the ridge of the skull, and multiple injuries caused by an air rifle.

Miraculously the animal survived the ordeal, and police were able to trace the dog back to Mr Turnbull, who is from Northampton, because it had been microchipped.

He claimed inflicting the injuries was his only option after he failed to find another home for the dog.

Video: Arizona missing dog: Stray who helped dog stranded in desert gets happy ending

PHOENIX – A stray dog is credited with reuniting a Valley woman and her furry friend following a June accident near Anthem.

It was an emotional reunion between Rose Sharman and her dog, Ily, who saw each other for the first time in more than two months after a car accident threw them both out of her vehicle.

Rose says Ily survived because of a stray dog, nicknamed "Buddy." The two dogs teamed up with each other while in the desert heat.

Both dogs were picked up, just days apart from each other.

Cute pooch sniffs out ugly vermin

“CANINE SLEUTHS are known for rooting out and tracking down cocaine, bombs, bodies and fugitives, but Dottie is looking for something else as she pokes her nose along baseboards and the cushions of a couch.

Bedbugs.

Yes, your skin is probably already crawling, but Dottie has no problem getting close to them. That’s her job.”
